Borgo Marinari, Naples
Borgo Marinari is a small waterfront village on the Megaride islet, gathered beside Castel dell’Ovo. Its harbor still gives the place its character, with boats serving the nautical clubs along the Santa Lucia quay and bars, restaurants, shops, and marine workshops occupying the village. An artificial isthmus connects the islet with the mainland through Borgo Santa Lucia.
The story here reaches back to the Roman age, when the islet hosted an extension of Lucullus’s villa. Monks arrived in the fifth century and established a monastery; the surviving church is San Salvatore. Later, fear of a Norman invasion cleared the way for a fortification, which became the beginning of Castel dell’Ovo.
The fishing community that once stood beneath Pizzofalcone was displaced during an urban renewal project approved in 1886. Today, the harbor and its compact village make that layered history visible beside the water.
