Biologiska museet, Stockholm
Biologiska museet is a museum building whose displays bring Scandinavian wildlife into painted scenes. It opened in 1893, designed by Agi Lindegren. Its architecture draws inspiration from medieval Norwegian stave churches, while tarred wooden shingles cover the exterior and roof.
Look at the portal for carved relief work recalling Borgund stave church. Inside, stuffed birds and mammals appear in dioramas shaped as natural habitats. Artist Bruno Liljefors made some of the painted backgrounds, bringing his dramatic vision of Scandinavian wildlife into the exhibition.
The panorama is lit only by daylight entering through the roof windows, so its appearance changes with the season, hour, and weather. The museum was also the work of Gustaf Kolthoff, who founded it and developed its presentation of animals within nature scenes.
