Bazylika Świętej Brygidy, Gdańsk

Bazylika Świętej Brygidy is the church before you, dedicated to Saint Bridget of Sweden. It is also known in Gdańsk as the church of Solidarność. Its Brick Gothic character belongs to the medieval northern tradition that made dramatic sacred buildings from brick.

In the fourteenth century, Bridget’s funeral cortege stopped in Gdańsk as it travelled from Rome toward Vadstena, and her relics were placed in a chapel here after the townspeople honoured her. That presence made this site a powerful focus of devotion across Pomerania. A Bridgettine convent was formally founded here in the late fourteenth century, and the convent church grew over a long building campaign.

Its story carries sharp reversals: fire, religious conflict, plundering, and later military occupation. During the Napoleonic campaign, the church became an arms factory and the convent rooms served as barracks. The religious community was eventually suppressed under Prussian rule. Notice the substantial brick mass and the bell tower: they hold traces of a place repeatedly damaged, adapted, and restored while remaining tied to Bridget’s memory.
