Baszta na Podmurzu, Gdańsk

Baszta na Podmurzu is an early surviving tower from Gdańsk’s medieval defensive walls, set within the Main Town. Notice its hefty masonry and compact mass: this is a fragment of the enclosure that once guarded the city. It was built during the fifteenth century and is Gothic in style, a medieval approach that favours dramatic vertical forms and pointed shapes.

War in nineteen forty-five left the tower almost entirely ruined. Its presence now carries the force of a hard-won return rather than an untouched survival. In nineteen eighty-eight, Gdańsk handed the building to its historical museum for a new branch, which welcomed visitors in nineteen ninety-seven.

That branch became the Gdańsk Museum of Sport and Tourism in two thousand, before closing near the end of two thousand eight. Nearby, the tower stands in the same old defensive chain as the Broad Gate Tower and Jacek Tower. Together they make the vanished wall line easier to imagine.
