Arbejdermuseet, Copenhagen
Arbejdermuseet is a historical museum about working people and the Danish labour movement. Its home is the Workers’ Assembly Hall, built in 1879; the hall is Europe’s oldest workers’ assembly hall. The museum’s collections bring together objects, artworks, publications and archival material connected with working-class life across the past 150 years.
Exhibitions show how everyday conditions and employment changed from the late nineteenth century, while also tracing the labour movement’s role in shaping Denmark’s welfare state and modern society. The Labour Movement Library and Archives, established in 1909, forms part of the institution. You can also find a coffee bar styled around the 1950s and Café & Ølhalle, a traditional Danish lunch restaurant in the basement. This is a place where social history stays close to ordinary life.
