At Słoneczna Street, this is Luxembourg’s embassy in Warsaw, housed at number fifteen. The embassy occupies a villa built for Zofia Żochowska of the Wedel family in nineteen thirty-six, designed by Lucjan Korngold, Stefan Koziński, and Philip Denis Omer Vanherrewege. Notice the villa’s restrained domestic scale: it makes a surprisingly intimate setting for diplomacy.

Poland and Luxembourg had already established diplomatic relations before nineteen twenty-nine. After the war, their relations resumed in nineteen forty-five through legations, then became embassy-level relations in nineteen sixty-one. The Luxembourg mission began its postwar Warsaw life in the Polonia hotel on Jerozolimskie Avenue, and for many years the ambassador responsible for Poland lived abroad, first in Moscow and later in Strasbourg.

A resident Luxembourg embassy was created in Warsaw in two thousand five. It briefly worked from the Sheraton hotel before moving into this villa. The building had an earlier diplomatic career as well: Bulgaria used it, followed by Albania for decades. Today, Luxembourg’s ambassador here also holds accreditation to Lithuania and Latvia, giving this quiet house a role far beyond its garden gate.
