Ambasada Bułgarii, Warszawa

Beyond the gate is Bulgaria’s embassy in Warsaw, at Aleje Ujazdowskie 33/35. Notice the compact, formal residence set back from the avenue: this address has carried a long diplomatic memory. Poland and Bulgaria began formal relations in 1918, and Bulgaria opened its Warsaw representation during the following year.

In the years before the war, the mission worked from several Warsaw addresses, including the Bristol Hotel and nearby residences along this avenue. By the late nineteen-thirties it occupied the Dziewulski family’s small palace here, before the mission was dissolved during wartime. Diplomatic relations resumed in 1945.

The representation became an embassy in 1948, and Bulgaria bought this property from the Dziewulski family soon afterward, returning its embassy here. The residence itself dates from 1910. Behind these walls, the embassy includes military and trade offices as well as the Bulgarian Cultural Institute, based here since 2003. Its ambassador in Warsaw also represents Bulgaria in Latvia, giving this quiet address a role beyond Poland.
