Torre Medieval, Porto

The surprise here is that this medieval tower has already made a short journey. Torre Medieval is a rebuilt medieval tower house in Porto’s historic centre. For many centuries, it disappeared inside a dense run of houses on the ground now opened into Terreiro da Sé, near the old butcher shops and opposite Porto Cathedral’s main façade.

In the 1940s, the surrounding blocks were demolished to improve the cathedral’s setting and sanitation in the area, exposing the tower again. Its fortress-like character persuaded planners to save it, but they shifted it about 15 metres from its original position. Rogério de Azevedo directed the rebuilding and added the Gothic-style stone balcony that gives the small structure much of its theatrical presence.

It held the city’s history office until 1960, and it now serves as a Porto Tours visitor-information point. The tower also forms part of a classified heritage site. While you are still here on the pavement, take in the contrast: a compact survival of medieval domestic architecture standing in an open square created only after the buildings around it were cleared away.
