The institution was formally created in nineteen eighty, but it inherits a much older collecting tradition connected with the university founded in eighteen sixteen.

In eighteen seventeen, the new university created a Faculty of Sciences and Fine Arts with its own museum. Its Column Hall displayed plaster casts after celebrated ancient and Renaissance sculptures; a planned painting gallery never materialised, and the intended room instead became a zoological cabinet. That early museum was broken up after the Russian authorities closed the university following the November Uprising, taking its most valuable holdings to Russia.

The museum now cares for many thousands of university-related objects, from manuscripts and scientific instruments to medals, seals, student record books, and academic insignia. A permanent exhibition in the dining room explores the university’s beginnings through its eagle-and-stars emblem.
