Muzeum Teatralne, Warszawa

Muzeum Teatralne is a Warsaw museum inside the Grand Theatre, devoted to theatrical history in Poland and elsewhere. Its large holdings range from designs and costumes to photographs and manuscripts, while specialist archives preserve the papers and memory of Polish Theatre, STS Theatre, and major theatre figures.

Muzeum Teatralne is Warsaw’s theatre museum, housed within the Grand Theatre in interiors designed by Mieczysław Piprek. Its subject reaches beyond Polish stages, embracing theatre history from Poland and abroad. Its holdings amount to tens of thousands of museum objects and archival items: sculpture, paintings, drawings, stage designs, costumes, photographs, recordings, manuscripts, documents, posters, programmes, sheet music and negatives.

That range lets you picture theatre as an entire craft world: an actor’s keepsake, a designer’s imagined setting, and the paper trail that preserves a production after the curtain falls. The museum also safeguards dedicated archives for the Polish Theatre and for figures including Leon Schiller, Juliusz Osterwa, Jacek Woszczerowicz and Tadeusz Łomnicki, alongside the STS Theatre archive. Established in nineteen fifty-seven, it began as part of Warsaw’s Historical Museum.

It has operated in the Grand Theatre since nineteen sixty-five. Ewa Jeglińska helped found it. The point is not merely to recall celebrated performances. You meet the fragile material through which an art made for a fleeting moment remains available to later audiences.
