Menina Nua - A Juventude, Porto

Menina Nua – A Juventude sets youth at the centre of this stop. In Greek myth, Hebe is the goddess who embodies youth, and she is the daughter of Zeus and Hera. Her name comes from the Greek word for youth and the prime of life, so this is not simply a decorative idea: it carries a whole divine identity.

Hebe’s gift is lasting youth. She has the power to renew youth in mortals, while among the Olympian gods she helps preserve their ageless condition. Yet her mythology is not only grand and distant.

She is also imagined as a capable young woman occupied with the practical work of Olympus: she prepares Ares’s bath, assists Hera with her chariot, and pours nectar and ambrosia for the gods. That last duty makes her a particularly vivid figure. Hebe serves the drink associated with immortality, joining everyday service to the gods’ eternal life.

Later, she marries Heracles after his death and his admission to immortality, and they have two sons, Alexiares and Anicetus. As you take in the name here, let it hold both meanings at once: physical youth, and the force that restores it.
