Almeida Garrett, Porto

Few Portuguese writers changed both literature and the stage as decisively as Almeida Garrett. Born in Porto in 1799, he became a poet, novelist, dramatist, journalist, public speaker and politician, a career broad enough to leave its mark on nearly every major cultural debate of his age. He is Portugal’s leading figure of Romanticism, and his writing helped bring that movement into Portuguese literature.

His politics mattered as much as his books. Democratic convictions forced him into exile in England, and on returning to Portugal he emerged as a prominent liberal parliamentarian, celebrated for forceful speeches. He did not merely write for the theatre: he pressed for the D.

Maria II National Theatre and for a conservatory devoted to dramatic arts, helping establish a new national theatrical culture. Garrett also carried old oral ballads and popular traditions into literary life, giving material once passed from voice to voice a place in print. Among his best-known work are the historical drama Frei Luís de Sousa, the novel Viagens na Minha Terra, and the poetry collection Folhas Caídas.

In 1852, he was made the first Viscount of Almeida Garrett and briefly served as Portugal’s foreign minister. This name recalls a Porto-born artist who made culture, politics and public speech part of the same ambitious project.
