Lhardy, Madrid

Lhardy is a Madrid restaurant whose story reaches back to 1839, when Emilio Huguenin Lhardy opened it. That makes this dining room one of Madrid’s oldest restaurants, and it has also been described as the city’s first luxury restaurant. Its culinary ambition was unusual for Madrid at the time: Lhardy brought French haute cuisine, shaped in the Parisian manner, into the city’s restaurant culture.

Look at the entrance and the polished shopfront: the ground floor contains a deli with takeaway service, while the formal restaurant occupies the second floor. The arrangement lets you encounter Lhardy both as an elegant food shop and as a dining destination. Emilio Lhardy came to Madrid after Prosper Mérimée, the author of Carmen, persuaded him that the city needed restaurants of higher quality.

So this place is tied not only to a long-running business, but also to a deliberate change in how Madrid could dine. Its name carries the memory of French culinary refinement meeting the capital’s appetite.
