Krasnale Filharmonii Wrocławskiej, Wrocław

The inscription here reaches back to the very beginning of post-war musical life in the city: the Wrocław Philharmonic gave its first concert on 29 May 1945. Take a moment on the pavement to examine these tiny Philharmonic Dwarves and the way they turn that institutional memory into a playful encounter at ground level. This particular dwarf installation dates from 2015.

They belong to a far larger Wrocław phenomenon. Small dwarf sculptures have been appearing around the city since 2005, and their number continues to grow. Their deeper ancestry is unexpectedly political: in the 1980s, anti-communist activists painted dwarf graffiti over patches where authorities had covered opposition slogans.

Orange Alternative later used the dwarf in peaceful public actions that mocked the communist system. After the end of communist Poland, the motif faded for a time; sculptor Tomasz Moczek installed the first five modern figures in August 2005. Today, the dwarves are both an artistic event and a social phenomenon, extending beyond Wrocław into nearby municipalities. Hunting for them has become a distinctly local way to explore the city.
