More than 15 million litres of water fill the Afrykarium’s 19 aquaria, pools and tanks, and 50 filters keep that enormous system clean. Here inside Wrocław Zoo, you enter Poland’s first facility of this kind, opened on 26 October 2014. Its subject is Africa as a set of connected environments: marine and freshwater worlds alongside land-based wildlife.
Outside, two beach-fronted pools recreate Namibia’s coast—one for African fur seals and one for Cape penguins—with a ship-like building between them containing restaurants and a viewing terrace. Indoors, the journey moves through four distinct habitats. You meet the Red Sea’s beach and coral reef life, then East Africa, where Nile hippos share the story with fish from Lakes Malawi and Tanganyika.
The Mozambique Channel section holds rays and brown sharks. Congo jungle exhibits bring together manatees, Nile crocodiles, and free-flying birds. Mariusz Szlachcic and Dorota Szlachcic designed the building. If you are planning your visit, it is open from 9 in the morning; closing time is 5 on Monday through Thursday, and 6 on Fridays, weekends, and public holidays.
