Jagusia, Wrocław

Jagusia was made to move: its central sculpture is divided into three parts that turn independently of one another. Yet this fountain has been out of operation for a long time, so the mechanism and water no longer create the animated spectacle intended here. The work stands in front of the Hutmen works at 241 Grabiszyńska Street, as part of an outdoor sculpture ensemble.

The figure is made of copper, and its simplified form refers to a woman’s body. When it was working, the interplay of turning metal, water and light gave this small pool an unexpectedly theatrical character. The sculpture was created by Tadeusz Teller and unveiled in April 1974.

Its design gives a fixed monument an element of change: even when still, it was conceived around the possibility of motion. Take a moment from the pavement to trace the separate sections of the figure. Jagusia is included among Wrocław’s contemporary cultural assets, preserving a distinctly 1970s experiment in public art: sculpture designed not only to be seen, but to perform.
