Geodezja Europejska is a marble surveying column in Warsaw’s Theatre Square. Installed in 1872, it linked measurements to the former city hall tower and to a Europe-spanning survey network. Restored and formally presented under its current name in 2022, it commemorates practical science in the city.

Geodezja Europejska is the name given to this historic surveying monument in Theatre Square. It was installed in 1872, correcting a date once widely assigned to it. Notice the marble shaft: beneath its glass cover, a metal tablet carries the measurement point’s coordinates and its height above the Baltic and Vistula reference levels.

An engraved cross marks the meeting of a parallel and a meridian, aligned with the former city hall tower’s spire. The column transferred coordinates from that tower, which served Warsaw as a triangulation base. Józef Ippolitowicz Żyliński directed the wider survey campaign that created this station.

Its parallel survey stretched from Ireland to the Urals and belonged to a growing European network for measuring the Earth. Rails once embedded in the square also traced the tower’s meridian. Despite its familiar nickname, this column is neither Warsaw’s historic zero meridian nor the line of twenty-one degrees east. It came through wartime destruction around the square intact, then received restoration and its official monument name in 2022.
