Feliks "Papa" Stamm, Warszawa

Feliks “Papa” Stamm is a bronze monument in Mier Park, portraying the boxer and coach in a tracksuit with a towel and gloves at his neck. Unveiled in twenty nineteen, it commemorates the European championship success of the Polish fighters he coached and connects with the nearby museum devoted to him.

A bronze likeness of Feliks “Papa” Stamm stands in Mier Park, near John Paul II Avenue. It honours a twentieth-century boxer who also trained fighters. Notice the tracksuit, towel, and boxing gloves gathered around the figure’s neck: the sculptor gives this coach the equipment of the gym rather than a ceremonial pose.

The statue measures two hundred and forty centimetres, above a small inscribed base. Lubomir Grigorov created the sculpture, which was unveiled on the twenty-first of May twenty nineteen. This monument marks a remarkable local boxing triumph.

In nineteen fifty-three, five Polish fighters coached by Stamm won European amateur championship gold in the East Hall of the Mier Halls. That venue is close by, and it now contains a museum dedicated to Stamm. His granddaughter, Paula Stamm, led the foundation that put forward the monument; Zbigniew Jakubas provided its funding. The figure makes that sporting memory feel physical: gloves ready for work, towel at the neck, and a coach preserved beside the hall where his team made history.
