Cmentarz Szpitala Dzieciątka Jezus, Warsaw

This sandstone obelisk commemorates people buried at the former cemetery of the Jesus Children’s Hospital. Its slender stone shaft rises from a stepped base and ends in a cross, making the memorial easy to recognise at the meeting of Lindleya and Nowogrodzka Streets. It was created in 1799 for the memory of 30,000 patients buried beside the hospital.

The hospital later moved to Lindleya, and the obelisk was brought to its present location in 1901. On the rear panel, you can see a plan of the former cemetery, with its boundaries measured in 53, 75, 83 and 69 ells. The side inscriptions preserve the story of the move and record that the dead were reburied at Saint Vincent’s Cemetery. This is a protected historic monument in Warsaw.
