Chłopiec z łabędziem is a sculpture by Theodor Erdmann Kalide. This work travelled far beyond its maker’s studio: the design was cast in iron at the Royal Iron Foundry in Gliwice and shown at the Berlin Academy in eighteen thirty-four. A foundry catalogue offered the model for one hundred and fifty thalers, and makers later produced further versions in iron, zinc, and bronze.

The sculpture earned a bronze medal at London’s Great Exhibition in eighteen fifty-one. Warsaw has examples in the Saxon Garden and the Wilanów Garden, placing this gentle subject within a much wider European chain of casts. Its history also includes a civic fountain in Chorzów.

The town bought an iron cast that decorated the market-square fountain from eighteen seventy until nineteen twelve, before moving to Jan Matejko Square. Water originally issued from the swan’s beak; it now rises from the basin. Conservation work in Gliwice renewed that sculpture in nineteen ninety-two.
