Chafariz da Rua das Taipas, Porto

More than a source of water, this fountain’s portico served as a shelter. Here in Porto’s historic centre, it is hemmed in by buildings along Rua das Virtudes. In 1772, neighbours from Largo do Postigo das Virtudes asked the municipal council to provide a fountain.

Before the eighteenth century ended, the earlier fountain already needed to be replaced. The monument you see dates from the late eighteenth century. Its design turns a practical water point into a small piece of stone theatre: a granite fountain rises as a pyramidal obelisk.

In the deep, rounded opening, a sphere sits back from the street, framed by pilasters. At the foot are a water tank and a half-round bowl, and both elements have their own spouts. Plant-like carving softens the stone, while a circular, mirror-like ornament marks the obelisk.

Take a moment here, safely beside the fountain, and notice how its sheltered recess makes sense on this tightly built street: this was infrastructure made for daily urban life. Since 1938, Chafariz da Rua das Taipas has held Portugal’s designation as a Property of Public Interest.
