Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej occupies Ujazdów Castle, a former ducal residence with a turbulent military and wartime history. Established in nineteen eighty-five, it presents and documents contemporary art from Poland and abroad through exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and other artistic activity.

Ujazdów Castle, the palace building before you, is home to Centrum Sztuki Współczesnej, Warsaw’s venue for contemporary art. The institution began on July eighteenth, nineteen eighty-five, and it works with art from Poland and beyond its borders. Notice the ordered rhythm of the façade and the enclosed court: this setting has changed purpose repeatedly.

A residence of the Masovian dukes stood here in the thirteenth century, before their court moved away and the site declined. On January twelfth, fifteen seventy-eight, Jan Kochanowski’s drama about Greek envoys received its debut here during a noble wedding. The building later served soldiers in several forms: barracks, then a hospital for wounded troops.

It was burned out and badly damaged after the Warsaw Uprising of nineteen forty-four. Postwar authorities demolished its remaining walls, yet a project by Piotr Biegański brought back the castle’s eighteenth-century appearance. Since nineteen eighty-five, the rooms behind this façade have hosted exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and a growing record of contemporary artistic experiment.
