Powodzianka, Wrocław
Pause here on the sidewalk and take in Powodzianka, the memorial before you. Its central figure is a woman carrying books, a choice that makes the sculpture feel less like a distant civic emblem and more like a person caught in the work of saving what matters. The monument was made by Stanisław Wysocki, a sculptor from Wrocław.
It remembers the effort Wrocław’s residents made during the great flood of July 1997, often called the millennium flood. The books give this small monument its particular force. They suggest that a flood threatens more than walls and streets: it can endanger the ordinary things through which a city keeps its memory, learning, and daily life.
Stand for a moment and notice the burden the figure carries; the gesture turns public disaster into something human and immediate. Powodzianka was unveiled on the first anniversary of that flood. So this is not only a record of catastrophe, but also a marker of the city’s response: a tribute to people who acted together when Wrocław was under pressure.
